Analysis and Comparison of the Technical and Business Planning Needs of Farmers Marketing Directly to Consumers and Farmers Marketing through Supply Chains

  • Mary Holz-Clause, Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, Iowa State University, Ames
  • This project includes a survey and several focus groups to determine if differences exist in the marketing and business planning needs for direct-market farmers and those farmers who sell differentiated food products to regional networks that do the marketing for them; $6,000.

Forging a Strategic Plan for a Strong Local Farm and Food Economy in Northeast Iowa

  • Brenda Ranum, Winneshiek County Extension Education Director, Decorah, Iowa
  • This project will include collaborative research and four public meetings to show how producers can successfully transition from traditional commodity operations through the decelopment of need and.or nurturing existing food and fiver enterprises in Allamakee, Howard and Winneshiek counties; $5,999.

Local Farm and Food Economy Analysis for Woodbury County, Iowa Region

  • Ken Meter, Crossroaads Resource Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, with Iowa partners Robert Marqusee, director of rural economic development for Woodbury County, and ISU Extension personnel
  • This research will show to what extent Woodbury County gains or loses financially from prevailing food systems and will highlight areas of potential strategic economic advantage. Data will be used by the County Board of Supervisors to advance their work in creating formal incenitves for organic food production and local food pruchasing; $6,000
