The group's mission:

  • To foster the success of highly differentiated pork value chains that are profitable to all participants, incorporate farmer ownership and control, and contribute to environmental stewardship and rural vitality

About the group:

  • Established in January 2002, the PNMWG was the first working group of the VCP project.
  • It has a part-time coordinator and works with more than 30 organizations and agencies.
  • It serves as a forum for groups and individuals to come together, exchange information and strategize about ways to address challenges facing niche pork supply chains.
  • It sponsors research and development projects aimed at addressing the challenges facing niche pork supply chains.
  • The working group publishes a newsletter four times a year, The PNMWG Update.
  • It also publishes reports of PNMWG-sponsored research and development projects.
  • Oversight is provided by a steering committee with representatives from the Leopold Center, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Institute for Cooperatives, USDA Rural Development, and the Iowa Pork Industry Center.The working group publishes a newsletter four times a year, The PNMWG Update. It also publishes reports of PNMWG-sponsored research and development projects.
