John (Jack) Rosazza

Jack Rosazza

In 1983 John Rosazza founded the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing at the University of Iowa. He integrated seven departments and 55 faculty members from the university to conduct research in the areas of biocatalysis and bioprocessing. His vast research interests include microbial transformations of herbicides, pesticides and other agricultural chemicals; fermentation production, biogenesis, and identification of new microbial metabolites; and biocatalysis in organic chemistry.

In addition to serving as the director of the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing, Rosazza also is the Associate Director of the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, a cooperative effort funded by the National Science Foundation. This center is working to combine education and training, significant industrial interaction and process development, industrial partnerships, and extensive communication and interaction with scientists and administrators at Kansas Unviersity, Washing University and the University of Iowa.

Rosazza also serves as a consultant to industry including Bristol Labs, Monsanto, DuPont, Merck, Pfizer, Upjohn, Shell Ag Chem, Pennwalt, Lilly, Eastman Kodak, NSC Technologies, Amoco Research, EnzyMed, Albany Molecular Inc., and Cargill. He earned his B.S. in Pharmacy, M.S. in Fermentation and Pharmacognosy, and Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and Pharmacognosy from the University of Connecticut.
