He received a B.S. in Biology from Bates College, an M.S. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and M.S. and D.E. degrees from the Thayer School of Engineering. He is a recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and a two-time recipient of the Charles A. Professional activities include service as Associate Editor for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, member of a Presidential Advisory Committee on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Personal Vehicles, Organizing Committee member for the Annual Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals, Manager of the Link Foundation Energy Programs, and consultant to industry and government. Lynd has authored over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and five patents.

A substantial portion of Lynd's intellectual effort is devoted to "big picture" issues related to the sustainable resource transition and imagining the role of biomass in a sustainable world. Published work in this vein encompasses process design, technology forecasting, life cycle analysis, and resource assessment. Additional activities include service on a Presidential Advisory Panel on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Personal Vehicles, testifying before Congress, and frequent invited presentations. Currently, Lynd serves on the Steering Committee of a project co-led by Dartmouth College.
