David Laird
David Laird has been with the National Soil Tilth Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, since 1991 and is currently a lead scientist. He is also a Professor in the Department of Agronomy and a USDA
collaborator. Prior to joining the laboratory, Laird was a soil scientist at the Soil and Water Management Research Unit in St. Paul, Minnesota.
His research interests include the development of near infrared soil sensor technology, the nature of soil clay-humic complexes, and the surface chemistry of soil clays. He has authored or coauthored 51 refereed journal articles, six book chapters, and 17 non-refereed technical publications.
In addition to his research, Laird has been actively involved in the Clay Minerals Society, the Soil Science Society of America, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Iowa Academy of Sciences. In 2003, he was the recipient of the Raymond and Mary Baker Agronomic Excellence Award.
