Biobased Industry Outlook Conference
August 29-30, 2005
Iowa State University - Ames, IA
Charles Cox
Charles Cox, assistant professor of Microbiology at the University of Iowa, focuses his research in the area of the wet milling industry. That industry conducts an ill-defined corn fermentation called steeping. Through Cox’s research, steep lactobacilli have been isolated and are being developed for industrial inoculation strategies. The technology being developed will assist in increasing starch yields and the value of the high protein co-products, steep liquor and gluten. Genetically engineered improvements in the steep lactobacilli will increase industrial productivity and corn value.
Cox has authored numerous research papers and authored over five book chapters. He joined the University of Iowa in 1974 after completing his post-doctoral work at Naval Biomedical Research Laboratory at the University of California in Berkeley. He earned his B.S. from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
